In good writing, words become one with things.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The people who influence us most are not those who buttonhole us and talk to us, but those who live their lives like the stars in heaven and the lilies in the field, perfectly simply and unaffectedly. Those are the lives that mould us. ~Oswald Chambers

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

Preschool Lunch

A state official in North Carolina inspected and confiscated the lunch of a pre-schooler.

The scary thing is that they can do that. And charge us for it. "Your child's lunch meat is not state-approved, so pay us $3 for the chicken nuggets we just gave her."

The funny thing is the child only ate a few chicken nuggets from the approved meal. Our toddler exists on pocket lint and eggs, despite our (and several professionals') best efforts.

I understand that "the state" feels it needs to be responsible with the kids they are caring for. The fact is, if no parent is present, they are the parent. And that's one of many reasons we home school.

...a state agent who was inspecting lunch boxes decided that her packed lunch — which consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips — “did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines"

The parent book handout for APS states that the schools are able to confiscate any unhealthy snack or meal choices that parents send with their children, such as potato chips or other such offending 'food'.  I do agree that some of those things are not food.  Yet since he's been attending, we have seen what the children are fed and are appalled.  But what can WE do?  Nothing.  Fried cherry pies was the latest grossness.  Bleh.  Again, I look forward to schooling him again at home.
